[원서 읽기] The House on Mango Street 단어 및 표현 정리 (ch1~15)

 

영어 공부 다시 제대로 해보자! 결심하고 찾아본 유튜브에서는 제대로 된 Output이 있기 위해서는 엄청난 Input이 있어야 한다고 이야기 해주었고 그 Input의 가장 좋은 것은 원서 읽기라고 한다.
이에 초급자가 읽을 수 있는 책을 추천해 주었는데 그게 바로 The House on Mango Street 였다.
정말 단어는 거의 다 알지만 내가 직접 쓰지 못할 것 같은 문장이나 몰랐던 단어를 직접 써보면서 외우고자 이 포스팅을 쓴다.

언젠가는 나도 나만의 친한 친구가 생길 것이다. 내 비밀을 말할 수 있는 사람. 내 농담을 설명해줄 필요 없이 이해해주는 사람. 그때 까진 난 빨간 리본이다. 닻에 매달린 풍선.

Without my having to explain them

내가 따로 설명을 하지 않아도 내 농담을 이해하는 사람.. 나에게 번역하라고 하면 without my explanation이라고 했을 텐데  without my having to explain them 이 훨씬 영어다운 표현 같아서 외우고 싶어서 적어봤다.

주인공 Esperanza가 자신을 닻에 묶인 풍선으로 표현 하는 장면이 인상 깊어 적어보았다. 아직 너무 어린 여동생 Nenny를 돌봐야하는 책임감 때문에 베프를 만들지 못하는 자신의 모습을 시각적으로 표현하는 것이 너무 아름답다.

Because Lucy has long legs she pedals. I sit on the back seat and Rachel is skinny enough to get up on the handlebars which makes the bike all wobbly as if the wheels are spaghetti, but after a bit you get used to it.

루시는 다리가 길어서 페달을 밟는다. 내가 뒷자석에 앉고 레이첼은 말라서 핸들바에 서서 탄다. 그러면 자전거는 바퀴가 스파게티인 것 마냥 흔들리지만, 곧 익숙해 진다.

Then he starts it up and all sorts of things start happening. It's like all of a sudden he let go a million moths all over the dusty furniture and swan-neck shadows and in our bones. 

골동품 파는 흑인 아저씨가 어떤 낡은 뮤직박스를 열었는데 그 소리를 묘사하는 장면이 너무 아름다워 적어보았다. 뮤직박스를 여는 순간, 수백만의 나방이 골동품점에 있는 낡은 가구들과 백조목 모양의 그림자와 우리 뼈를 지나가는 것 처럼 느껴졌다니.. 또 아래와 같이 소리를 묘사한다. 여기서 백조 모양의 그림자를 말한 것은 그 음악을 듣고 소름이 끼칠 정도로 감명 받아 닭살 돋은 것을 묘사한 것이라고 한다. 

It's like drops of water. Or like marimbas only with a funny little plucked sound to it like if you were running your fingers across the teeth of a metal comb.

The dog is big, like a man deressed in a dog suit, and runs the same way its owner does, clumsy and wild and with the limbs flopping all over the place like untied shoes. 

그 개는 사람이 개옷을 입은 것처럼 크고, 주인이랑 뛰는 모습도 똑같다. 덤벙 덤벙하고 거침없이, 네 다리가 마치 묶지 않은 신발끈 마냥 퍼덕 퍼덕하면서 뛴다. 시각적으로 뛰는 모습이 잘 보여서 기록해보았다.

limbs 사지
flopping 파닥 파닥 / 농구에도 flop이라는 용어를 사용하는데 농구에서 플롭은 심판이 상대편에 대한 개인 파울 콜을 하기 위해 상대편 플레이어가 신체 접촉을 안 했음에도 페널티를 받기 위해서 넘어지거나 비틀거리는 연기를 말한다. 

 

 

Cathy's father built the house Meme moved into. It is wooden. Inside the floors slant. Some rooms uphill. Some down. ... Out front there are twenty-one steps, all lopsided and jutting like crooked teeth (made that way on purpose, Cathy said, so the rain will slide off), and when Meme's mama calls from the doorway, Meme goes scrambling up the twenty-one wooden stairs with the dog with two names scrambling after him. 

메메가 이사온 집은 캐시 아빠가 지은 집이다. 목조 건물이고 내부 바닥이 비스듬하다. 어떤 방은 오르막이고, 어떤 방은 내리막이다. 외부 앞쪽에는 스물한개의 계단이 있는데 모두 뻐드렁니처럼 비스듬하고 튀어나와 있다. (캐시 말로는 빗물이 고여있지 않기 위해 일부로 이렇게 만들었다고 한다) 메메 엄마가 현관문에서 부르면 메메는 두개의 이름이 있는 개와 함께 스물한개의 계단을 허겁지겁 경쟁하듯 올라간다.

All round, the neighborhood of roofs, black-tarred and A-framed, and in their gutters, the balls that never came back down to earth. 

주변 집은 검은 타르를 입힌 A자형 지붕이었고, 지붕 홈에 공이 들어가면 다시는 땅으로 떨어지지 않았다.

Louie's cousin stopped the car right where we were and said, Everybody out of the car. Then he took off flooring that car into a yellow blur. We hardly had time to think when the cop car pulled in the alley going just as fast. We saw the yellow Cadillac at the end of the block trying to make a left-hand turn, but our alley is too skinny and the car crashed into a lamppost. 

루이 사촌형은 차를 멈추더니 모두 내리라고 말했다. 그리고는 전속력으로 차를 몰아서 사라져갔다. 깜짝할 사이에 경찰 차는 골목으로 빠르게 들어갔다. 노란 캐들락은 블럭 끝에서 좌회전을 하려고 했으나 골목이 너무 좁아서 가로등 기둥에 충돌하고 말았다.

Marin screamed and we ran down the block to where the cop car's siren spun a dizzy blue. The nose of that yellow Cadillac was all pleated like an alligator's, and except for a bloody lip and a bruised forehead, Louie's cousin was okay. 

마린은 소리를 꽥 질렀고 우리는 경찰차 사이렌이 울리는 블록까지 뛰어 내려갔다. 노란 캐들락 앞면은 마치 악어 코처럼 꾸겨져 있었고 루이의 사촌형은 입술에 피가 나고 이마에 멍든 것 외에는 괜찮았다.

She is the one who told us how Davey the Baby's sister got  pregnant and what cream is best for taking off moustache hair and if you count the white flecks on your fingernails you can know how many boys are thinking of you and lots of other things I can't remember now.

마린은 대이비라는 아기의 언니가 어떻게 임신을 했는지, 턱수염을 떼려면 어떤 크림이 좋은지, 그리고 손톱에 흰 반점을 세면 날 생각하는 남자 아이들의 수를 알 수 있다는 등 지금은 기억나지 않는 많은 것들을 알려주는 사람이다.

But we aren't afraid. We know the guy with the crooked eye is Davey the Baby's brother, and the tall one next to him in the straw brim, that's Rosa's Eddie V., and the big one that looks like a dumb grown man, he's Fat Boy, though he's not fat anymore nor a boy.

하지만 우리는 무섭지 않다. 우리는 사팔뜨기 눈을 가진 대이브의 오빠를 알고, 밀집챙모자를 쓴 키가 큰 로사네 데이 5세를 알고, 뚱뚱한 소년이라고 불리는 뚱뚱하지도 소년도 아닌 큰 어른처럼 보이는 남자를 알기 때문이다.

All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes.

갈색 피부색에 둘러 쌓여 있으면 안전하다고 느껴진다. 하지만 우리가 다른 피부색의 동네로 차타고 들어가면 무릎이 덜덜 떨리고 창문을 올려 잠그고 눈을 똑바로 뜬다. 그렇다. 세상일은 다 그런 것이다.

They are bad those Vargases, and how can they help it with only one mother who is tired all the time from bottoming, bottling and babying, and who cries every day for the man who left without even leaving a dollar for bologna or a note explaining how come.

기저귀 채우고 젖 먹이고 아기 키우는 행동을 bottoming, bottling and babying라고 라임으로 표현한 게 멋져서 적어 보았다.

Just stopped looking out when little Efren chipped his buck tooth on a parking meter and didn't even stop Refugia from getting her head stuck between two slats in the back gate and nobody looked up not once the day Angel Vargas learned to fly...

... a woman's place is sleeping so she can wake up early with the tortilla star, the one that appears early just in time to rise and catch the hind legs behind the sink, beneath the four-clawed tub, under the swollen floorboards nobady fixes, in the corner of your eyes.

앨리샤네 집은 아침에 일찍 일어나 또띠아 별을 준비(아침식사)하기 위해 잠들어 있다. 그 또띠아 별은 싱크대 뒤, 발톱 4개 달린 욕조, 아무도 고치지 않는 부풀어 오른 마루판 아래에로 숨어 들어가는 쥐들을 잡기 위해 시간에 맞춰 일찍 일어난다. (비유법 - 와다다 쥐들이 움직이는 것을 묘사)

Darius, who chases girls with firecrackers or a stick that touched a rat and thinks he's tough, today pointed up because the world was full of clouds, the kind like pillows. 

다리우스는 폭죽이나 쥐를 만졌던 나뭇가지를 가지고 여자애들을 쫓아 다니며 자기가 쎄다고 생각한다. 이런 애가 오늘은 마치 베개같은 구름이 세상을 덮었다고 하며 하늘을 가르켰다.

You can never have too much sky. You can fall asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky can keep you safe when you are sad. Here there is too much sadness and not enough sky.

하늘은 봐도 봐도 질리지 않는다. 하늘을 보면서 잠이 들 수 있고, 하늘에 취해 잠을 깰 수도 있다. 하늘은 당신이 슬플때 안전하게 보호해준다. 이 곳에는 슬픔이 가득하고 하늘은 부족하다..
